review 1: I read it in one day and postponed breakfast until I finished reading (which would be around 4 PM). It's one of those books that have their flaws, too obvious to be overlooked, and still, they're incredibly satisfying. In spite of a wide array of dark themes, I felt embraced by the plot; and while Bator is quite ruthless with her characters, she's also understanding. She managed to keep the grit reality of Polish post-industrial towns without making it simply ugly. Her Wałbrzych becomes thick with history, choked with accusations, but romantic, homely, sometimes even beautiful and inspiring. Not that the novel leaves the reader with much hope; some of it, yes, but just a grain, with no guarantee it will suffice. The bigger picture is just as bittersweet. I can forgive the... more escalation of macabre and occasional melodrama, uneven pace, plot devices, unnecessary backstories, and odd metaphors; this writing just resonates with me. And I'm happy that among Polish writers there's someone like Bator, unpretentious, unapologetic, and original.

Godna polecenia.
