review 1: I didn't know much about A Dual Inheritance before delving in, and I think fifty pages or so passed before I finally came up for air. The comparisons between this novel and Jonathan Franzen's are apt – the scope of the story is large, the characters expertly drawn, and while it's a novel of big ideas, Hershon explores her themes in scenes that crackle with tension and humanity. The questions that it raises about the types of people who we need in order to feel complete, and the complicated (sometimes confusing) ways in which our personalities and lives are both a result of our background and our decisions, and how patterns of behavior persist and recur over time are fascinating and perplexing, and Hershon expertly explores them in a story that covers decades and generati... moreons. This was a great read.
review 2: I am between three and four stars. I really liked this book and thought the characters were really rich. It is a very ambitious novel that spans decades and sometimes jumps years between chapters. All the characters are flawed and complicated- trying to run from their inheritances ( one a working class Jew who becomes a wall street success and the other a wasp who runs health clinics in the developing world). Their friendship is further complicated by a woman and further still by the unlikely ( and somewhat unrealistic) friendship of their daughters who end up in the same boarding school. A good read. less

Hershon is great at creating very real characters, but the story itself was dull and overly long.

Eloquent, surprising, and not-too-choppy. A fantastic read!
