review 1: I received this book for free as a Goodreads giveaway. I hate to say this since it was a giveaway book but I couldn't finish this one. It seems based on other reviews that I am not alone. My feeling could be entirely based on where I am right now but I was bored with what I read of this one. The characters didn't excite me, nor did the story (what I read of it). I am happy to have won this book and might pass it along to others who might be interested.
review 2: Read this because of an article on The Millions that said something to the effect of "If Jeffrey Eugenides wrote this, there'd be a billboard for it in Times Square" or some such. Which seems like an apt comparison: this was an entertaining and well-written novel in the contemporary middlebrow mold... more. (That sounds like a diss, but I really don't mean it that way. Also, do people still say "diss"?) I enjoyed reading this, but found myself craving something weirder or more challenging after I got through it. less
