review 1: Richard and Julia have been engaged since children and neither are happy about it. Richard fled to avoid this marriage and his controlling abusive father. Julia cannot figure out a way to legally get out of the marriage contract. Julia decided to declare Richard dead to get out of it and what do you know, Richard reappears. Julia discovers him through his new identity pretending to be a Frenchman. She tells him what she plans to do and begs him to go along with it for both of their sake. Richard tries but fails and when his father discover's him the marriage is back on. They try their best to outwit his father and destroy the marriage contract but in the mean time start to enjoy each other's company a little more then they expected to. Many on the Mallory family ma... moreke appearances in this book, my favorite is James Malory trying to kill Richard because (in the beginning of the book) Richard is in love with James wife Georgina.
review 2: Let’s get one thing straight: This is a well written book, for the most part, with very little discernible flaws.I did not enjoy this book. I’ll get to my reason in a second. This book is basically about two people who have been bethrothed since they were little and have hated eachother’s guts ever since. However they meet eachother years after the gentleman’s sudden disappearance, don’t recognize eachother and they like eachother. Then they figure who they are and hate eachother once again. Then blah blah blah, love happens and they fall in love again. Now onto my main issues:Plot: Plot was very interesting even though it got a bit slow for me somewhere in the middle. Yes, it was predictable but what romance novel isn’t? The plot was very well spaced and generally I think one of the novels stronger points.Writing: Writing, as I may have mentioned before, was impeccable….not excellent but impeccable. I felt drawn in to the scenes immediately and the pictures and descriptions were good.Character and Character motives: Now this is where my peeve began. Oh the first couple of chapters up until a little after she realized who he was were fine, but then it just started to irritate me afterward.First I would like to ask, at what exact point in time did she fall in love with him?The time he kissed her while openly pining over another woman at the her party ?The time when he threw her out of his apartment and then when she came back to discuss issues with him, told her he hated her, then threw her on the bed and treated her like a prostitute? The time when she came to rescue him, then he accused her of the whole plot to kill him, basically throwing her coming all the way to then to rescue him.And to Richard, exactly when did he start to fall in love with Julia?Between all the times he was soooo sure he hated her because….another thing I never got why he hated her so much. I get why he might not like her because his father wanted her money so bad, but to hate her to that extent, hanging her outside the balcony, after all those years still holding this personal grudge against her like it’s all her fault…even openly stated that the one person he hated more than his father was her. What the hell man? She was as much a victim in it as you?And how did she end up falling in love with him again? And at what point did he fall out of love with Georgina , because one thing he’s sulking over how she cannot be his and how her husband will kill him and next thing I know, it’s “I want to marry Julia, but then it would mean my father wins.”Their relationship for me, just wasn’t developed enough and felt kinda like everyone else and the author wanted them to be together more than they wanted to be together.Speaking of everyone else- and this is more of a personal pet peeve of mine- I hate hate hate, especially in a series, when other the supporting characters start meddling a little too much in the main characters lives, especially if the supporting characters are from another book in the series. I get it, you got your happily ever after, now let someone else have their story. I usually prefer less supporting character and I really didn’t like what Gabrielle was doing, siccing Julia on him so she could “save” –Hod, I hate that word- him. It was really annoying because then they make her character seems so all knowing, ie she knows what is best for Richard, she knows what is best for Julia, she knows what is best for both and they deserve eachother and that just irritated the hell out of me, to the point I started skipping parts where she talked. But again, this is just a personal peeve for me and I’m aware a lot of people like this sort of thing.SO yeah, basically, I just wanted the relationship between the two MCs to be a little more developed and not so forced. I also didn’t like the fact that she fell in love with him right when he was being a downright ass to her, just because he kissed her and she saw stars. Because that’s how love really works. less
