review 1: Humor is tough to nail, but this author drives it home, line after line after line. It’s the most successfully comic m/m I’ve read. It’s short, but the humor never fails or flags. I would have loved a sex scene (or a warm-up to sex scene), which could have been absurdly slapstick yet also endearing and hot, but this is a vanilla love story, and sometimes that’s refreshing.Also hard to pull off: The story is told through the POV of a clueless man who takes social ineptness to loveable new heights. But though the narrator cannot perceive the real feelings and motivations of the other characters, the reader can, though the information is filtered through this bumbler’s eyes. That’s skilled writing. I could say this is not Shakespeare and thus doesn’t deserve fiv... moree stars like some of my other intense five-star reads, but Shakespeare was as adept at comedy as he was at dark and serious, and comedy is just as much about getting to the heart of human nature as tragedy. I loved the characters and their arcs. Super fun read. Charming and lovely. Five stars.
review 2: I really like this cover. I got the sample and the opening is really confusing. First it just starts in the middle of something and you don't know what. Then even though it's just two characters talking there's no dialogue tags so I had to read it twice to follow the conversation and kind of understand it. Seems like a lot was said that we should just get without any context. Then it's super short scene that just when you're starting to settle into it, it jumps to a new scene that's really jarring. Just wasn't a good opener that left me confused and not hooked at all. Sample's too short for me to know if I really like it or not. To buy or not to buy... less
