review 1: A fantastic mini unit history focused on one of the most important battles in recent memory. Mcmanus's research is outstanding as is his judgement in alternating between small unit actions and the overall picture. His chapters about Support and the Brass are magnificent as they are usually overlooked or in the case of the brass overwhelming the story of the every day dog soldier.A marvelous read for anyone wishing to have a greater understanding of the carnage, heroism and importance of the fight on D-day at Omaha Beach.
review 2: It's a balanced account, and the Germans/Poles who fought there are treated as human with human motivations. It's hard to believe that humans could survive, based on the author's well-researched descriptions. But they did, and showed
... moreremarkable courage and ability in adversity. The landings were not well planned or executed; nevertheless, soldiers rose above themselves. It's going to be one of my favorite books. I've finished almost all of the book, so only the bibliography remains.McManus comes as close as any historian ever has to describing infantry combat. Highly recommended.BTW, McManus has a number of other military histories. I expect to look them up; this will keep me reading for a long time! less
