review 1: This is a wonderfully constructed book. The way the plot is structured in the beginning was at first a little off putting, and I first found the writing to be a little bit annoying. Luckily, I stuck with it, because once the true nature of the book is revealed, it all starts to fall into place. What you are left with is a beautifully written book, with such simplicity as to leave the reader wanting more.
review 2: For some reason, this book just didn't speak to me. I honestly found it a bit of a slog. I didn't find Cullen's narrative voice very compelling. I'm not sure why. I really only finished it because I wanted to find out what happened to Gabriel. I was also disappointed that the mystery of the Lazarus woodpecker was such a minor detail in the book - I gu
... moreess I was expecting some more about the history of the bird and why it became extinct (this might be because I'm married to a wildlife biologist). Oh well. I'm not a huge fan of YA fiction, really, and maybe this is why. less
