review 1: I don't normally go for books like this but the whole bullied nerd "zero to hero" setup seemed intriguing. It's a superhero story with a supernatural twist, or vice-versa, like a cross between Buffy and Spider-Man. It even has a healthy dash of romance.I really liked Justin, the main character. He was noble, nerdy, compassionate, and an overall good guy. It was fun reading about how he discovered and then learned to cope with his budding supernatural abilities. I also liked the other players in the story; the goths, the geeks, the cute cat girl, the sorcerer, what a colorful cast of characters. Really, there was nothing about this book I didn't like. It turned out to be one of the best stories I've read in quite a while, and I'm pretty picky. (I often spend more time tryin... moreg to find something to read than actually reading!)Now I have to admit, it was just a tad bit cliche. Take a quick look at top paranormal titles on Amazon or Goodreads and most of them are pretty similar, except they're almost all with female main characters. It's so refreshing to find one about a guy, finally! Yes he's a teenager, it's a YA novel. I usually avoid those, but I decided to take a chance and I'm so glad I did.It had a bit of self-aware humor, poking fun at some of the typical genre tropes but it was by no means a parody. It was very clever in parts and I actually found myself chuckling out loud at times. There were also healthy doses of geek culture references. Overall it was a warm, light-hearted feel-good story that had me grinning.Enough gushing, if you're looking for something a little different, yet familiar, that's told from a male POV, buy it, read it, have fun! I can't wait to read the next one.
review 2: 2 stars seems a bit harsh but going by the goodreads labels it is the fitting one.. The problem with the book is the main character. The rest is okay but run of the mile. Supernatural love interest who is an badass some trouble in school, MC transforms and worries about what he has become. Useful ally likes him for mysterious reasons, love interest likes him despite him being quite unlikeable. The usual. The humor fell flat for me but that is a matter of taste. The writing is decent. Characters are nothing special. But I absolutely couldn't stand the MC. I would have found him much more tolerable if I didn't know his thoughts. It is like the author looked at nerd and teenager stereotypes and picked traits and world views just to make me dislike his main character. Okay maybe a bit of an overstatement but disliking the MC kinda made me not care about what happened to him. less

Eh, not bad but not great either. Parts were funny, and it had a nice balance of action and romance.
