review 1: Box out By John CoyLiam Bergstrom leads a normal life, he just gets called out for the Varsity school basketball team. Liam has 2 problems in his life right now, his girlfriend is in France, alone on a trip with some friends, the other problem is the coach of the Varsity team. The Coach is leading prayers in the locker room and Liam does not feel comfortable but does not want to do anything about it because he is scared he will get kicked off or won’t get enough playing time, what will Liam will do about it, what will become of his future.I like this book because it is about a real person who lives a real life but it has so much suspense and just makes you want to know what he is going to do about it so bad. I recommend this book to anyone who loves sports and especial... morely basketball. If you also like the book Box out then I recommend the books and you should read them in order here is the order, Top of the order, Eyes on the goal, Love of the game, and Take your best shot featuring the same people in different stories. Also read Crack back which is by John Coy.
review 2: In the novel Box Out by John Coy, the combination of sentence flow and common interest made me enjoy this book from front to back. The novel really reminded me of the novel The Big game of Everything by Chris Lynch. I say that because they both were about sports which is my all time favorite thing to read about with an exception of The Hunger Games series. One thing the two books have in common is that they are both fairly easy to read. The vocabulary level is easy and I feel I could be reading at a much higher level. But sometimes I think it’s ok for me to read books that are easy and I feel I can completely understand and annotate the text. The main character in the novel Liam is a Sophomore in high school and he gets moved up to varsity for basketball. He is tall and lanky and a phenomenal rebounder. The author does a good job of describing how Liam looks and how the other characters in the book look. I like how the characters are so realistic in the novel. The characters have personality and seem real compared to some books I read where there is no description. There is nothing for me to really not like about the characters because they all fit really well with the story line. Liam’s girlfriend Mackenzie is away in France on a trip for school so she can be learning French. While she is there, Liam and her send emails back and forth on how much they miss each other and how each other is doing, etc. Liam usually receives emails a few times every week but one day he received two. After opening the first one, he had read the second and it said that it isn’t working out anymore so they are done. The conflict between them affects Liam’s basketball game. He felt very lost with all the commotion in his life at the time. First it was an issue with the coach and the basketball team, now Mackenzie. One day that really gets at Liam is Valentines day. “Walking down the hall on Valentine’s Day, I am assaulted by heart decorations” (176). That quote is describing how he is sad that he doesn’t have a “valentine” anymore. He feels like a bucket that has no water in it, dried out. When Liam goes into the locker room one day to talk with the coach, it resolves nothing except Liam handing the coach his uniform. “You put yourself first. You thought you were better, more important. What you did was dead wrong.” “I don’t see it that way. I quit” (168) By that point in the book, he was left with nothing. He lost two things in life that he loved, Mackenzie and basketball. Box Out is a Realistic Fiction book that brings out the reality in most every section. When I read Realistic Fiction, I fully understand the context. I have read and will continue to read books from this genre. I always find reasoning to come back and read more books of this genre. For some reason, most every book I read of Realistic Fiction, I enjoy. I rarely say anything negative towards it. The books also always have good themes. In the novel Box Out, the theme was teaching people not to give up. Liam gave up towards the middle of the book but he climbs his way out of that throughout the novel. As one of my favorite quotes state, “Get knocked down seven times, stand up 8.” That quote says so much because if a person feels failure, you should just recover and make yourself better. I gave the novel Box Out by John Coy a 4 out of 5 stars because it was a smooth book that I fully understood but yet the flaws were not very affecting. I didn’t think this book was a five star book because I have read many that were way better. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend this to any sports lovers out there. less
