review 1: A short but powerful book on the power of putting others first. Dickson walks the reader through how true influence and power come from removing ourselves from the center of our story and seeking to serve others. This is done by voluntarily taking ourselves from positions of power and lowering ourselves for the good of others. Dickson shows us examples and stories from numerous areas of life - politics, military, business, sports, entertainment - and shows us how our natural inclinations are probably wrong about how to influence others. Dickson, a historian by trade, also shows how the life of Jesus was the lynchpin that changed the world's view on humility.Highly recommend picking this up.
review 2: I took a course with Dickson at Regent College this summe
... morer and picked up this book at the end, thinking it could be a good resource for me and some others in my organization. Dickson makes some good points about humility and clearly shows that it was Jesus who made this trait a desirable one in our Western culture, supplanting the dominant honour/shame culture of the societies in which Christianity grew out of. Along with compelling stories from past and present (at times a little too present), he offers some great advice to anyone in leadership. However, I feel that he kept getting distracted by debates about Christianity and Atheism. He throws out loaded examples of culture debates that take away from his message. I kept thinking he was poking a little too hard, which took away from his message. less

His point in "How the humble are beautiful" (Chapter 4) is especially intriguing.
