review 1: This book was a huge disappointment.It was simply a comprehensive history of science which happened to include the Islamic world, the author made no analyses concerning how/why the Arab world held on to the knowledge and simply presented it in a linear fashion.Despite that, this book could still have been extremely enjoyable if the writing was not so dry. It seemed as if he had a timeline with dates and names (and nothing else) and simply put them into sentence forms. The introduction and conclusion both made attempts at being interesting and it did manage to both begin and end the book on a more engaging note.It also had sooo much information in it, this book would be awesome for someone who needed the facts, the amount of research put into it was obviously ext... morereme.
review 2: I'm Greek and I 'm feeling that during my education at school I never realised how much the Arabs preserved and transferred the scientific knowledge of Ancient Greece untill I picked up that book in one of my trips to New York.I loved the depth of the research put the author and the simplicity of the writing on profound philosophical and mathematical subjects. It was simply one the best books I've read in my life and surely reccomend it to anybody that wants to understand how Anaximander believed in a theory of evolution ('originally man was born from creatures of a different species'..., how Eratosthenes made an accurate measurement of the earth's circumference 2500 years ago and how Archimedes said the historical phrase to king Hieron' give me a place to stand and I shall move the earth' less
