review 1: first time i read about mehmet II about 7 years ago. i was read the book which published by local and moeslim author. when i read this book esp for one till fourth chapter i am totally disagree. This book give me different perception about Mehmet II, that's why i search everything about the author in order to know which 'side' the author stand. john freely is a history professor, he wrote a lot off book esp about turkey and islamic science. He is in the netral 'side', besides the fact that some source in his book is using perception from people who dont like islam. That's why, reading this book we have to choose whats point we can accept, and whats point we cant.Anyway, this book is good, freely has his own way to tell us about grand turk. deskriptive and de... moretail.
review 2: Fairly impressed, although for the most part, this book is a bio of the warrior side of Sultan Mehmet. The last three chapters were quick overviews of the Ottoman Empire after his death, which does nothing for the biography. Very detailed about certain battles, about the rebuilding of Istanbul and about some of the erpsons important in his life. If viewed as a travel book of the area, it is very good for checking places to see. It is clear the writer loves the topic, the area and Turkey. less

Only if you are very interested in Turkish history. But if you are, this is an in-depth portrayal.
