review 1: This guy should have been the winner of the Worst Person to Ever Have a Prestigious University Named For Them Award, but he was narrowly edged out by the Joseph Goebbels Institute of Higher Learning.Seriously, this guy isn't the worst, but he's pretty close. He was a bigamist, fear-mongering cult leader who ruled with an iron whim. He's at least partially guilty of a massacre and responsible for a bloody coup and a guerrilla war. He was ridiculously foul-mouthed for a man of god, with an exceedingly mercurial temperament. He married 55 women, one of them his own mother-in-law! It was also a habit of his to marry women who were currently married to other men, with and/or without the permission of their husbands. So yeah, let's name a university after him!He does make for so... moreme really interesting reading, however.
review 2: Great book. It presents a very unbiased pure secular/historical view of the man. I am member of the church of which he was a prophet and for me it helped me to put context to many of the quotations, stories that are discussed in many of our Sunday meetings. John Turner was careful to avoid any link into the spiritual world, not to his criticism as that was not the purpose of the book. This book presents a great historical side of the coin that is Brigham Young. If one wants to complete the study of the man and gain deeper insight into his motivations and designs one must couple it with the spiritual text of the church in which he was the president. less
