Novella Review: This Night So Dark

Title: This Night So Dark (The Starbound Trilogy #1.5)

Author: Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

My Rating: 4 stars

This is a free Novella – find it here.

A big fan of the Starbound trilogy, I was really pleased to read this short Tarver and Lilac story, going back to Tarver’s time before These Broken Stars. I definitely recommend it if you love this series!

Synopsis:

Tarver still has nightmares about the night, six months before the Icarus crash, when he rescued civilian researchers held hostage by brutal mercenaries. Now he and Lilac reconcile his memories of that night with the truth uncovered after the crash.

Short connects first two novels. Includes preview chapter from This Shattered World.

My Thoughts:

This is a very short book, and so this will be a short review!

Inside this novella, you get to hear from Tarver about his time before the Icarus crash. It’s a great look into the history of how he became a hero and how much he has grown in since this event. It’s great to hear the background to why he is a hero, and why he ended up where he did in These Broken Stars, as well as see him interact with other characters, not just Lilac. He is honestly such a grade A character and seeing the interactions with Lilac before each chapter is so wonderful.

I also adore the fact that we got to see Lilac in this short – she’s such a great and engaging character, and she is so caring towards Tarver while he’s telling her something difficult. It shows how far their relationship has progressed and is really natural to read. When you realise you only see her character through dialogue in this short, it is also a great testament to the work of Kaufman and Spooner.

As usual, Amie and Meagan do a great job in pulling you into the story and amazing you with their beautiful writing. It’s lyrical, it’s clear and it’s just lovely. I could read it for days.

This book was such a joy to read, and looking back at it now on my Kindle has me longing to read the whole series again.

Recommended for: lovers of the Starbound Trilogy will enjoy this book! You need to read book number 1 before you can start it, but it’s a great short into the world you love. If you love Sci-fi, I’d also recommend reading These Broken Stars – you can see my review here.

Quotes (Spoiler Free):

“There’s no what’s next, there’s only now, and this moment lasts forever.”

“Just because you couldn’t save everyone doesn’t mean you’re any less of a—” “A what?” “A hero.”

“Now I feel adrift—except for the tether binding me here, to this girl at my side.”

If you like the Starbound trilogy, then I definitely recommend checking this out. It’s short, it’s sweet and a great addition to the series. With a couple of new prequel stories coming out in January, there’s no better time to start it. You can buy the first book here.

Love,

Maddy
