review 1: This was an extremely informative book which worked to illustrate the horrors of the potato famine. Unfortunately, it may have done that too well as all the accounts of starvation tended to blend together. At times I had trouble getting into this book although that may have been because I was really busy and could not find time to read more than a few pages at a time. But, it was comprehensive and well researched.

Of course, the rich got richer and the poor got poorer as landowners took the opportunity to oust tenants from the land, literally throwing them out in the dead cold of night and tearing down their cottages, in order to save money on their poor tax, which was based on the number of tenants. The emigration flight from Ireland to Canada and the United States was not much better. Faced with overcrowded ships, little food and raging illnesses, many died on the voyage.
