The Zombie Chasers
review 1: Two days after the zombie apocalypse has begun, siblings Zac and Zoe along with their friends Rice, Madison and Ozzie, are ready to save the world. They have the antidote! (Details about that can probably be found in Volume 2.) Now they have to drive across the zombie-infested United States to replicate the antidote and cure all the zombies. Yes, this is for younger readers. The zombies are to be fought off and contained but not killed. Kloepfer is able to strike a precarious balance between gross out humor and minimal levels of violence. This is written for the Diary of a Wimpy Kid crowd who have heard about zombies but are not quite ready for actual undead mayhem. Be prepared for ridiculousness. A climactic scene takes place in the aquarium inside the Mall of Amer... moreica, battling zombie sharks. Puns as well as made-up words (“chomputated”) pepper the writing. Steve Wolfhard’s childlike illustrations ramp up the level of humor and grossness, with chapter numbers drawn as severed limbs. This books is for readers who want disgusting and silly, not for readers who want a well-crafted tale. Volume #4 is due to be published in April of next year.
review 2: The saga continues...Can the kids get the cure to those who need it before they themselves become zombies? With a trip that includes zombie Elvis impersonators, a purchase of a Winnebago, a visit to Mall of America, a giant Ketchup bottle involving a tornado, and the headquarters that started it all, fans of the series will find themselves satisfied. The illustrations that accompany this novel help enhance the storytelling, bringing it to a new level of grossness, which is why young readers will enjoy it. I love it because I love a good zombie tale, especially one that is aimed at younger readers. If you have a reluctant reader in your household - especially a boy age 9+ - you might want to consider this series. less
