review 1: We lost a great mind and great writer when we lost Michael Crichton, author of Andromeda Strain, Prey, Timeline, and Jurassic Park, who died in November of 2008. What a pleasure to find his pre-fame novels. Drug of Choice is about an Emergency Room doctor who has two different patients who are in comas and whose urine is bright blue. He investigates and is drawn into a bizarre and frightening situation that reminds us of the Robin Cook medical thriller novels. I liked this story, but was disappointed that the main character is pulled into some bad decision-making the way he was (don't want to spoil it for you). It is a younger Crichton's writing, not his top form, but still fun to read and educational as all of his novels were. Worth four stars t... moreo me.
review 2: This is an obscure early work of Michael Crichton's, written under his original pen name John Lange. The writing is extremely straight-forward and the action is very fast-paced, so with only 166 pages, it's a super-fast read. The cover calls it a "supersuspense" novel - I don't think I'd call it that, simply because the story moves so quickly, there's no time for any real suspense to build. It's really just a techno-medical-thriller-ala-Michael-Crichton with a great premise and multiple twists. I very much enjoyed it! less
