review 1: This is a wonderful book. Hunter Davies does an excellent job in putting the letters in to some form of context and the letters themselves are incredible to read. The book does reveal the two distinct John Lennons. He is always funny, witty and sharp, but at times he is incredibly sentimental and sweet and other times...well let's just say I would not want to be on the receiving end of one of those letters.Great reading for Beatle and John Lennon fans.
review 2: This book turned out to be a lot more than I expected. I'd read Hunter's "authorized biography" of the Beatles many years ago, and enjoyed it, but I just expected this to be a collection of letters, lists, and whatnot. I was surprised by how thick it was!Hunter did a great job of weaving John's lif
... moree story in between the letters, and added some details that I had never read before. I really like the way that he presented the letters, with a photograph and a text version right next to it to make it easy to read. It's nice to get a personal view of John's daily life in this way. Any fan of John, or the Beatles would enjoy this...I sure did! less
