review 1: After reading Samurai I thought to myself: "All this was really interesting, but I think I'd enjoy a more general history a lot better". If you read the reviews for that book you'll notice much the same opinion shows up time after time. I just want to apologise to John Man. You were right and I was wrong. You need a central figure to focus everything on and this book sorely missed one (until the last chapter). There are snippets of interesting stories but overall the book was a chore to get through.
review 2: I adored John Man's book on Genghis Khan. It was pacy and as full of information as a pie is full of meat (to quote an old friend of mine). Sadly this is not in the same vein at all. It seems to be trying too hard. There is rather little information which
... moreis bulked out with ruminations and visitations to sites of tangential interest. The notion of the book excited me muchly. But the actuality fell far short. I finished it. And it will inform work I do in this area. But it will not be continually under my hand, as I had hoped. less

Ugh, reads like a really dry history book. Brought back memories of Vien's lessons.

I was really impressed by the extensive research Mr Man did for this book.
