review 1: Scalzi is an author that I usually enjoy, and I was not disappointed by this book. It's a short read, but remains interesting throughout. What's more, it's different in that it doesn't follow the usual narrative conventions, and the setting is quite unique as well. I like things that are different, so this made me enjoy it even more.Throughout the story, there are hints and overtones of wrongness. This is on top of the vague Lovecraftian vibe that the setting creates. There aren't necessarily any heroes or villains either. There are good people, and bad people, and conflicts that lie far beyond any of them. I like that the ending has twists to it that even I didn't see coming, but which make complete sense in the context of the hints and implications set up by the precedin... moreg events. It's such a short story that I don't really want to talk in detail about any of the characters or themes, because they're better experienced in context, and this book is short enough that it doesn't have a lot of space to do it in. Suffice it to say that this is an excellent short story in all the right ways, thoroughly engrossing with no dull spots, and leaving you wanting more while still managing to provide a satisfying narrative arc.
review 2: It is hard to explain how I felt about this one. The concept is an interesting one, but the story seems to barely scratch the surface of what could be an intricate unique sci-fi myth.Unfortunately, the characters seemed a bit shallow and the plot a bit too predictable. I absolutely love most of the work by this author so I kept trying to talk myself into liking it just a bit more. Plus, it was a Hugo Award nominee so perhaps I just had too high of hopes. In the end, this story just didn't entertain me. I wanted it to go a bit deeper. On the other hand, it did get that second star because it was so short that the uniqueness of the concept showed a lot of promise. less

Sometimes you just can't win. Especially if you went around whipping gods for interstellar travel.

Great story. The ending is not what you would expect from a Scalzi novel.
