review 1: Really fun read - reminded me more than a little of the very best episodes of the old TV show Northern Exposure with a balanced mix of humor, pain, love and philosophical insight. There are a lot of characters to keep track of, particularly for such a tiny town, and I did have to flip back a few times to remember who was who. Perhaps I was just reading too quickly, or not paying enough attention while I was laughing out loud.
review 2: This book was really great. There was some exposition about the town, but what really made the town for me was its characters. The author was able to make me believe that even though the characters were out of a particular scene, they were somewhere else milling about the town and tending to their own. I think this is due to them
... more being so lively and interesting. The town itself is sleepy, on the surface anyway, and it seemed to be a character of its own. The story alternated between calm, touching, humorous, sad, and exciting. I loved how the humor was evident, but subtle at times. It was a funny book without beating you over the head with endless jokes. I found myself drawn into this book slowly, but then completely and willingly. This helped me identify with the characters that were inexplicably drawn to a small, but wonderful Alaskan town. less

Northern Exposure meets Get Shorty, with a touch of Smoke Signals. Quirky and fun.
