review 1: I liked the premise and the overall plot. I didn't even mind the ending, and the pacing wasn't too bad for me. The major problem for me in this book is that nothing neatly fits, the way most politico courtesan novels do. For most of the book, there is clearly some pretty hefty stuff going on - end of a war, treaty, racial discrimination. Etan is not really interested in any of it - it's Isadel who does and knows the interesting stuff. Etan is mostly self involved with his tattoos. (The other thing - everyone, with the exception of a few punks at the beginning, likes him! Even Isadel's little jealous thing lasted less than a chapter and then it was back to all smiles. But otherwise, he always knows the right thing to say to diffuse almost anything. It was somewhat unrealist... moreic. Someone with that much influence over the top noble in the land is going to make enemies. )But back to not fitting. I was fully expecting some kind of epic betrayal, given the naive trust Etan places in others, or maybe getting too caught up in a political scheme orchestrated by Loren. The ending seemed to come from nowhere. Yes, there was some foreshadowing but it didn't fit thematically.Anyway, it definitely was a page turner, whatever its other flaws. I would have liked more overt world building with a slightly more savvy main.
review 2: I LOVE THIS AUTHOR!!This story was extremely fascinating. It was kind of a lesson in some long forgotten art of tattoo designs and artists with a love story mixed in. Once you can get more into the full fantasy of the Adorned this becomes a beautifully crafted story. So settle in and just relax into the story so that you will be able to enjoy it to its full extent. It really is a terrific journey. It has two love stories going on, one not so easy to spot. The other love story is as deep as time. I really enjoyed this story. less
