review 1: John Loftus, who happens to be the first atheist writer AFTER Hitchens whom I read ("Why I Became an Atheist: A Former Preacher Rejects Christianity"), edits a collection of previously published essays which systematically address some of the more frequent arguments by apologists. If nothing else were to "sell" this book as one worth reading, the inclusion of two of my favorite academic atheist writers, Richard Carrier and Robert Price, does it nicely. As with "The End of Christianity," which followed this book, the collection is a bit challenging for the casual reader, requiring both a knowledge of scripture and of apologetics. The frequent targeting of apologists such as W.L. Craig or C.S. Lewis gives the reader intellectual ammunition to confront the arguments from the ... morereligious. But, as Richard Carrier has said repeatedly, it is not out of hatred for Christians that we dismantle their arguments. It is out of love for humanity, out of a desire to free people from intellectual chains.
review 2: If you want a book that seriously challenges the Christian faith this would be the best place to start - or the only place to start. There are a lot of footnotes for further study and reading, and it covers a lot of ground. The most convincing chapters were the ones about the historical reliability of the bible and the resurrection story. Unfortunately in many places the evidence was selective. That is the authors failed to acknowledge some evidences for which they had no rebuttal. However this is typical for both sides of the debate. The chapters about Christian world view were in my view unconvincing, but only because they tackled many popular Christian arguement FOR faith, that are also unconvincing and filled with misinformation. I wish there had been more information on the cognitive science, the human mind and psychology aspect of Christianity. less

Some good chapters. A little too self congratulatory.

Tightly argued, as an ex-Christian apologetic.
