review 1: This book seems to ramble, so much that I felt I was getting a little frustrated. He doesn't get to "the point" (as I defined it) until about halfway through. However, a main theme is that the subject of the relationship between dogs and humans has gotten so little scientific attention, his ramblings are a testament to his conviction. This is a fascinating book for anyone that has ever had, or wonders about those who have, a dog. It's not a series of "aww look at the brave/cute/smart dog" stories, but tries very hard to be an objective examination of this relationship, and is candid about it's own shortcomings. A great read!
review 2: Disappointingly uneven. The evolutionary, anthropological, historical portions were incredibly interesting, informative and wel
... morel-presented. The personalizing portions of the narrative were condescending and laborious. The ultimate hypothesis that he presents regarding the cerebral symbiosis of dogs and humans struck me as a little silly and forced. Still, I learned a lot and would recommend it with only slight reservations. Worth at least a skim. less

I really wanted more dog and less human - this felt like way too much human time.

Some interesting facts, but pretty dry and scientific.
