review 1: I got about half way through this book and am now setting it aside. It's not a bad book by any definition, just not to my taste. The constant shifts in narrative and timeline kept me from getting engrossed in the story. And I failed to develop any empathy for any of the characters. The plot was fairly interesting and the writing was good, however. But to me, characters that I care about are everything in a story, and you didn't really learn enough about the people in this book to care about them. This book in general just failed to grab me.
review 2: Caitlin Strong, Texas Ranger. Tough lady, in a long line of Rangers who do whatever it takes to get a result they think is right. Of course she's fabulously talented with a gun, and battles the personal demon... mores requisite for a grit lit protagonist. Other fabulously talented fighters join the fray as Caitlin strives to avenge her husband and redeem herself. It's the first of a series so it's not a spoiler to say that she doesn't get killed. The book was interesting enough to send me back for the next installment. less
