review 1: I picked up this book on a recent trip to South Carolina. Overall: a solid read for anyone with an interest in rural prohibition-era life during the Great Depression. I really enjoyed reading about that world through the eyes of many characters. The descriptions of the wild southern outdoors are particularly beautiful. There is a chapter of Mary Jane on a terrible bender, stumbling through Charlotte; I enjoyed the contrast between the rural community and big city, although both were struggling with the same rampant poverty and addiction. The first half of the novel was very intriguing and exciting. As the book continued, I found it repetitive with heavy-handed foreshadowing of what was to come. The religious overtones were a bit much for my liking. 3/5
review 2:... more> This book seemed to start out strong but it offered a lot of tantalizing information early on that I thought would be foreshadowing, but went nowhere. There was a lot of religious imagery that rang hollow -- there's little impact in giving a character a smack-down about their faith if you haven't shown them to have faith in the first place. The author best voices the young adults in the book, which makes you wish he'd spent less time with their life-weary elders. less

Interesting tale of "whiskey" or rather moonshiners during Prohibition. Enjoyable, easy read.

I would give this 3.5 stars. Worth reading, but not earth-shattering.

I paired this one with a trip to Charlotte. It's a good one!

Dark, atmospheric and a bit slow, but in the end, worth it.
