review 1: You never heard of Sand Koufax? was an interesting book to read. This books starts out talking about his slow start in his professional career and struggles he faced being a Jew baseball player. The book then progressively shows his success after he almost gave up playing baseball professionally. This book is an picture book biography that could be used in a text set about baseball or talking about historic problems Jews have faced. This book uses word, pictures and facts on the side about Sandy Koufax. I enjoyed this book because baseball is one of my favorite sports. This book could be used to talk children never to give up. Just like Sandy, everyone struggles at something and children need to understand it is okay to fail at times. To incorporate this book in the class... moreroom I would have the student write a letter to the character showing their feeling of how he was being treated. I think this book would be good to use around baseball season to incorporate the interests of the students in the classroom. Also I could have them write out their goals for the beginning of the year and see if they reach them at the end of the year.
review 2: I knew little about Sandy Koufax before reading this book and found this book very informative and interesting! Koufax was a puzzle to many people which adds to the allure of the story. I liked the little "stat" boxes interspersed throughout the book and even baseball fans will likely learn from these as they are titled (i.e.: most famous Jewish players who began their careers before 1960). The back of the book offers a glossary of baseball terms and online resources. less
