review 1: Here Comes the Garbage Barge, by Jonah Winter, is based on the true story of when the city of Islip, NY ran out of space in its landfill for all of their garbage in 1986. The town's government decided to put all of the trash on a barge and travel down the US coast to see if any other cities can dispose of it. They had no luck. This children's book is a fictionalized version of the true event that teaches children of the dangers our throw-away society has on our health and environment. The book's objects and characters are illustrated with pieces of garbage for features which along with the funny barge "Cap'm," Duffy St. Pierre, makes the book an engaging read. The illustrations and colorful descriptions of the garbage will appeal to the imaginations of young readers and li... moresteners. This would be a great book to read aloud to kindergarten through second grade students, especially if it could be tied in to a unit about Earth Day or saving the environment. It will encourage students to take reusing and recycling seriously.
review 2: I thought the book was really successful in showing that regardless of the publicity received by the Capt. and the garbage barge, they were famous for the wrong reason. This book showed good artwork, especially when it showed Lady Liberty holding her nose as the garbage barge passed by her. The book was really funny with each place encountered by the Capt. showing him that they were not willing to accept the garbage barge. This book pretty much was showing how one man's trash is definitely not another man's treasure. I believe readers will enjoy the artwork and the story from start to finish. less
