review 1: Super interesting, fewer stars just because I'm not sure I think this story was history-changing. But I had no idea about any of this history. Evidently Grant expelled all the Jews from a certain chunk of his territory during the Civil War. He then seemed to spend the rest of his life repenting for that, so did a whole lot to combat prejudice against Jews in the US. I also really appreciated that every time the author compared the plight of the Jews to the plight of African-Americans, he included the caveat that African-Americans had it worse.
review 2: I was looking for the story of the 30 Jewish families that lived in Paducah who were uprooted by Grant's order. I thinnk Lincoln's reversal permitted them to return -- but Sarna devotes no time at all to that s
... moretory. he is interested in the political implications for Grant and for the larger Jewish community in the US -- but does not follow through on the people who were most directly effected. I think I will not continue reading. less

A non-fiction historical account about a subject never taught, but totally enlightening!!

Yeah, pretty arcane stuff. But the book was quite interesting. Really!
