review 1: I was kind of surprised I liked this book as much as I did. I found myself wanting to know what was happening with these characters when I wasn't reading. The main character was my least favorite and I think I probably missed the point of all the wacky things happening in this New York, but the world was superbly drawn and peopled with fascinating characters and a certain event at the end of the book had me truly upset. I'm glad I spent the time on this book. It is a departure from my normal genre, and I am encouraged to try another of his books.

Like Letham's other books, the author assumes you know a lot about NYC and there isn't much exposition about the settings and some of the context of the city. If you aren't very familiar with NYC this book might be less fun, but it was a great ride for me. less
