The Ghosts
review 1: I downloaded this free book from a invitation in BookBub news letter I receive. I look forward to reviewing the books in the newsletter as I have found some interesting authors I would have never found other wise. Child of the Ghosts was as good as I had hopped, and I have gone on to purchase the entire series, and currently reading the next series “Ghost in Exile”. This is the story of Caina Amalas and her beginning from a child loved and pampered by her father, but hated and tormented by her arrogant sorcerous mother. She loves books, reading, and her father encourages her, often asking questions to have her improve her observation of people and the things around her. One morning she awakes to find every one in the household laying, or slumped over, alive by helple... moress. She runs to the library and find her father sitting in his chair, staring unblinking at nothing, like everyone else. Her mother comes in and gloats over her with malicious satisfaction over the situation, confessing she did it, and that she was to learn additional sorcery for her efforts. In rage over her fathers impairment, and as her mother advances to take her to her teacher Caina grabs a poker and strikes her mother. Her mother falls hitting her head, and dies. While Caina is standing horrified over the death of her mother and the necromancer her mother sold her to came to claim her. He took her to a deserted mansion where she was subjected to a number of tortured experiments while teaching his students the science of necromancy. She escapes her prison cell at about the same time a legendary group of spy’s called the Ghosts attack and kill the guards and others learning sorcery and necromancy. They have a difficult time deciding what to do with the eleven year old girl that has been so brutally tormented. Finally the leader of the group named Halfdan decides to take her to their home base in the hills, and see if they can train the to assist them in their future activities to protect the kingdom, and to fight against the evil men that will injure future children like her. So this becomes her training as a woman ninja, night-fighter, and Ghost.
review 2: This was a surprisingly good freebie on Amazon. I hadn't expected such depth of character in the book, and I really enjoyed the damaged heroine (Caina) and the crafty villain. The prose of the story is unfortunately rather juvenile... and despite some vicious violence and situations, it's told in a very YA feel with simpler word usage. I also noticed some phrases and words repeated several chapters apart. The story itself is clever and I liked the time lengths that passed as Caina grew; it was well handled and not annoying. The story is about Caina who grew up with a bitter mother, that had washed out of mage school, and chose to dabble in her daughter's head instead, and her doting father, who lacked ambition, but let her learn multiple languages. The mom is caught up with an ancient necromancer and arranges to have Caina sold to him, she bungles the spell and Caina kills her after she destroyed the minds of the whole household. Unfortunately the necromancer comes for her anyway and starts up dark rituals which involved making a bloodstone after he slices her stomach open and kills her father. Caina manages to escape, but finds everyone poisoned; she is rescued/picked up by a circle of Ghosts (empire's secret fighters) and learns of the necromancer's past. She begins a series of training with them to be a night-fighter and plots for revenge. less
