review 1: I got this book after the world cup, when I was really curious about soccer strategy and knew nothing of the game's history or strategy. I assumed Inverting the Pyramid would be a punchy summary of soccer strategies in some depth, along with a discussion of their creators and the pressures that led to their innovations. Instead, I was treated to a series of character studies with tactical descriptions that assumed a vast amount of knowledge. Wilson seemed more interested in the characters who changed the game than the changes they made. The text was frequently dry and not terribly helpful for a total neophyte. It's clearly a well-researched work, but it's for someone who already knows the formations and wants to know the characters behind them.
