review 1: This is a challenging book, not so much for its complicated plot as for its style. Before I bought it, I had not realized it was translated from Catalan. That isn't a problem, of course, but the writing style is a bit different from what I'm used to. That being said, I found the book delightful once I got into it, and really intriguing. I loved the parallel stories of the four Christophers and their errant father. The images of the Spaniards driving across Europe were vivid and interesting, and the relationship between Gabriel and Bundo was quite moving. A very good book.
review 2: Still not sure as to what I think.... an interesting concept, that opens the whole 'create your own adventure' style of narrative, and to be honest I almost wish it would have ended
... more [without giving away spoilers] in a manner that allowed for each reader to come to their own conclusion. The four voices were distinct of one another which afforded a credibility that was essential for a book of this undertaking. I just didn't come away with any deep attachment to any of the characters. The characters were all like. as the title suggests, pieces of lost luggage. Expendable, replaceable, not so much memorable. less

The central character is the one who isn't there. Interesting premise, but didn't grab me

interesting idea, but I'm not sure I'm interested enough to keep reading! Nope, I'm not.

I liked it a lot until Cristòfol started talking... After that, I just liked it.
