review 1: This book is highly unsettling. There's definitely a driving poetic force behind its development rather than a solid plot, which didn't sit well with me. Peixoto spends whole pages describing the most mundane of things... and not in a good way. I wanted to read a novel, not a Portuguese anthology about hot weather and the devil. I found myself skipping whole sections and not losing any meaning along the way. The characters also gave me a vaguely creepy feeling; I eventually started hoping they would just go away. Three stars.
review 2: Hum. Definitely a book for people who enjoy reading (I like reading, to learn stuff but don't really enjoy reading, the experience itself). Beautiful and sometimes very touching descriptions that take me right back to my childho
... moreod days spent at my grandparents' farm in Alentejo but I like being told a story. Although I understand that this is presumably a great book, I get lost in the story (if there's one!) and in many, if not most of the pages I find it hard to follow through and even to know who is speaking. Generally, I had a hard time seeing the point why people would like or enjoy such a book but this is to be taken as a mater of my taste. A very typical writing style that will perhaps enchant those who appreciate literature. So if you're into reading and exploring (beautiful) writing styles, this should be a book for you. The no rating, accounts to me not even knowing where to store the memory of this book in my mind. I don't think I'll be reading any more of this kind of books so I just leave the comment. To rate the book would be unfair as this is way out of my scope of books and I have no standards from which to evaluate it. less
