review 1: Joseph O'Niell tells the story of Hans van den Brock, estranged from his wife Rachel who has gone back to live in England, passes the time living at the Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan. Through his friendship with an immigrant from Trinidad, Chuck Ramkissoon we travel through New York, through well known and less well known neighborhoods. They bond through their love of cricket and Ramkissoon's dream of setting up an American cricket league. The game is described in beautiful detail as is the city and it's 5 boroughs. As I read, the story became less important than the writing. The writing is simply marvelous. I found myself reading some sentences over and over again. For anyone who has lived in New York and for those of you that haven't, read this wonderful ... morebook.
review 2: I liked the writing (though I note this is a translation) but didn't much care for the apathetic protagonist and the plot didn't really make much sense. I almost gave up reading it a couple of times, but had a few hours on a beach to kill so picked it back up. I didn't even really care what happened, but I like the background/lingo of cricket (but don't let that deter you from picking it up...I'm just interested in sports writing). less

So glad to finally finish this book. Probably closer to a 1 star. Long winded and boring.

Not the most intriguing of plots. Strongly, artfully written.
