review 1: I guess at the end it was the writing that moved me the most. The stunning discipline needed to keep the voice of unnamed lawyer as he follows the ever diminishing reality of his life in Dubai, from the very first page to the last where he is left in his apartment, sitting in his massage chair (the ‘Pasha’) waiting for the knock at the door, which will presage his arrest. The voice remains clearly defined and consistent throughout the book. Pedantically lawyer like - just pay attention to the careful and exact use of the parentheses! Devoid of feeling in the usual novelistic sense. At times hysterically funny and often quite profound, although the thoughts seem to be put forward as afterthoughts to a brief.

... moret hold my attention and I end up putting them down soon after starting them. I'm so glad that I decided to finish this one. A lot of the reviews talk about this book's lack of plot. These reviews are correct, but this didn't bother me. Most of the book is the narrator's internal dialogue, which in my opinion was equal parts hilarious and dry. While this book had sad and lonely undertones, it was also comical, and I found myself laughing out loud through out the entire book. I wanted to give it a 5-star, but I usually save that rating for books I can easily recommend to others, and I just can't imagine a time when I would I would actually recommend this to anyone. Maybe I'll end up changing the rating once the book has marinated in my brain a little longer. less
