review 1: I really enjoyed this book for what it was, a thrilling, action-packed adventure story. It has hidden gold, ancient letters, south american mobsters, and car chases, to mention a few of the exciting events. Tom Trelawney, the main character, has always been a bit of a rascal, and when he gets to go off on an adventure with his irresponsible, gambling addict, adventurer uncle Harvey, he jumps at the opportunity. And it seems like he is going to be good at being a true Trelawney, just like Uncle Harvey. While he has moments of doubt, wondering if being a liar and a lowlife are really the best idea, he doesn't waver for too long, and more often than not decides that the exciting adventure is more important than the right choice. There's always at least one choice that he can ... moremake that allows him to feel redeemed, however. Overall, a great book for boys and struggling readers, as there is not a dull moment, and no gushy feely stuff.
review 2: Some spoilers ahead!Pretty fun adventurous book for young adult readers. Tom Trelawney is a likeable protagonist and I appreciated that he was not some "superkid" character. He's smart, but not overly smart (for example, he struggles to remember what he learned about Sir Francis Drake in his history class, and laments his lack of Spanish-speaking skills). He's also a bit of a troublemaker, but he generally tries to do what is right (i.e. he feels guilty about paying the elderly couple on the mountain only $60 for the journal pages after he and Uncle Harvey have essentially ransacked their house for the pages). There are some violent scenes, which may be too much for some younger readers. Tom and Uncle Harvey are mortally threatened various times during the story (including death threats from a notorious Peruvian gangster) and Tom accidentally kills a man in self-defense. I am left wondering, though, how and why Tom's parents allow him to traipse about with Uncle Harvey in the sequel, "The Sultan's Tigers." That title caught my eye at my library, and when I picked it up, I realized it was the second book in this series, so I read "The Island of Thieves" first. Stay tuned for a "The Sultan's Tigers" review soon! less

Good "boy" book. A bit far fetched for my taste. Worth reading the historical notes at the end.
