review 1: I am an avid reader and almost always, no matter how bad a book is, I'll finish it. I couldn't do that with this book. Two hundred pages in I gave up. This book lacks everything that makes a book worth reading -- characters that grab your attention, a story that captures your interest and writing that is enjoyable to read, or at least intellectually stimulating. The story, if you can discern it through the long, drawn-out sentences that meander all over the place and end up saying nothing, is just not evident -- nor worth the effort to figure out. The writing is so dense and convoluted that the reader is left to wonder just what is going on. It's almost as if the author threw words on a page in no particular order with no real purpose just to confuse, torment and annoy... more. If so, he succeeded with me.
review 2: This book definitely has its own way of telling a story. More interesting than the story it tells, though, is how it tells it. It doesn't seem quite like stream of consciousness, but it sure is something like it. Trying to read this book is like trying to sip from a pressure washer. That said, as I read, oddly enough, I found myself being able to follow it better. Of course, it isn't a light read. Some portions really felt like hard work. The things Cohen makes language do are amazing. Not necessarily easy to approach, but definitely something to behold. less

One of the most over-blown, over-written, pretentious books I've ever read.

Great, but I won't be giving this behemoth a second read any time soon.

Just spectacular. Blows all other new Jewish lit out of the water.
