review 1: I truly enjoyed this novel about family. Joshua Henkin really nails the intimate byplay between family members. The way you can love someone yet not understand them or agree with their life choices. And how does all this work when a central part of that circle, a part that helped all the others meld, is taken out through death? When the family comes together for the summer, what secrets will come to light? Mr. Henkin's deft handling of this delicate spider web (as called family) shines as he shows us the twists and turns, the complex pattern in something that from afar seems so simple. My favorite part of the whole story was the ending. One I could believe and understand.
review 2: This book is a portrait of an "assimilated" accomplished Jewish family one year
... moreafter the brother/son dies. The tone is always very sad; secrets are spilled. The author did a very good job of capturing the pain between the husband and wife, as well as their love for each other. He also portrayed the myriad feelings among the siblings. I enjoyed reading the book; I would really give it 3 1/2 stars. less
