Normally with only five nominees, the PGA has extended their nominee list to seven. “Chasing Coral” is a Netflix Original nature documentary about our disappearing coral reefs. “Joshua: Teenager vs. Superpower” is another Netflix Original documentary, this one about a teenager rallying a community against China’s Communist Party. “City Of Ghosts” is an Amazon distributed documentary about the workings of ISIS filmed by Syrian rebels risking their lives to get the footage. “Cries From Syria” talks to all those involved and covering the country’s humanitarian crisis and civil war while “The Newspaperman: The Life and Times of Ben Bradlee” follows the life of the iconic Washington Post editor that was big during the Watergate era, both of which come from the HBO Documentary Films. “Earth: One Amazing Day” is from the BBC takes a page from Disneynature, capturing the course of a day all over the world, from exotic jungles, high mountains and remote islands. From National Geographic and director Brett Morgen (“Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck”) comes “Jane,” a documentary chronicling Jane Goodall’s work in nature with chimps. Just throwing on some guesses, “Joshua: Teenager vs. Superpower” and “City Of Ghosts” are probably the most relevant of the nominees and could probably get an Oscar nomination. “Jane” looks well made and is about an iconic figure, so that could also get a nomination. And “Chasing Coral” looks right up the alley of the Academy voters, who could likely propel this environment destroying call-for-help because its timeliness as well.
