review 1: I studied Latin American literature in college and was excited to read this book, having heard a lot of positive things about Juan Gabriel Vásquez as an important up-and-coming Colombian novelist. However, I didn't get a lot out of this book. Its portrayal of the collective shell-shocked mood of an entire country was effective, but its characters, especially the women, were not very interesting or complex. Certain attempts to tie together disparate plot lines, like the significance of airplanes, seemed forced and ill-fitting. None of the characters were painted in an intriguing way, and the women were present seemingly only to serve the plot arcs of the men. The timing and order was odd, a bit stop-and-go, with long, meandering descriptions that seemed they would lead to ... moresome sort of revelation, but never did. I was disappointed in this book because there is so much amazing Latin American lit out there that seems to be getting less hype, but this isn't a great introduction to the genre.
