review 1: Πλούσια και πολλές φορές διεισδυτική γραφή όσο αφορά την υπαρξιακή αγωνία του ήρωα. Ενδιαφέρουσα μεταφορά της κοινωνικής κατάστασης στην πόλη και τη χώρα. Αδύναμη όμως η κεντρική ιστορία γύρω από την οποία πλέκονται οι ζωές των ανθρώπων ενώ μένεις με την αίσθηση πως υπήρχαν δυνατότητες.
review 2: I'm taking a class on Latin America and this book has naturally attracted my interest. While fiction may not always be the best source of factual information about a place, it does (if done right) provide a psychological and emotiona... morel glimpse that can be just as valuable. Vasquez has certainly done this right. His Colombia in general and Bogota in particular has a claustrophobic quality of fear and a pervasive lack of safety that he conveys in the absolutely stunning writing. Well worthy of the awards and accolades. And the translation is phenomenal and perfectly eloquent. It's a story within a story (and I actually liked the later more) about a man who crosses paths with anther in an completely random and brutally violent way and, having his life permanently altered by the outcome, sets out to find out about the stranger's past that might have caused it. It's really a fascinating read, excellent as a sociopolitical commentary on a county's tragic violent history and on a personal level about what a terrible thing it must be indeed to feel unsafe in a place you consider home. Very interesting, exquisitely written book. Recommended. less
