review 1: This book was pleasantly absurd. Villalobos' writing style reminds me of a less devastating Juno Diaz. The social criticisms were sharp, well aimed and amusing. I feel that this book would be useful in a high school class to discuss a wide range of topics from economics to philosophy. At least I know I would have preferred to have read this in high school than some of the other drivel forced upon me.
review 2: A very interesting novel that looks at modern Mexico through the travails of a large family in rural Mexico. Not a linear book but thought-provoking in its own way. It requires a bit of background on the modern Mexican political reality (which the preface and the glossary provides) and it requires some conscious reading (this is not a "yarn" in any sense
... moreof the word; it is not the fabulist sort of novel a la Garcia Marquez, either). It seems to pack a lot in relatively few pages. I am likely to read this again (along with his first novel, "Down the Rabbit Hole") to appreciate it that much more. less

Very funny. It's not very satirical. But it makes up for it in being wildly surreal.

El mejor nuevo libro que he leído a la fecha. Genial. Hilarante.
