Fitz of Horror Review- Unearthed Films American Guinea Pig: Sacrifice

Written by Bryan Fitzgerald (Fitz of Horror) January 2, 2018

The third installment in Unearthed Film’s American Guinea Pig series is a visceral and stomach churning descent into spiritual discovery, self mutilation and your ability to keep down your last meal.

Synopsis-Haunted by the death of his father and other psychological traumas, Daniel returns to the home where he was raised. Faced with intense emotional scars, as well as physical — which are realized by the years of self-harm depicted by the cuttings adorning his body — he enters the bathroom to begin a journey of self-exploration, self-mutilation and quite possibly, self-enlightenment. Prepared only with three white candles and some crude instruments, Daniel attempts to beckon the embrace of the Goddess Ishtar to assist him on his self-illumination.

Directed by Poison Rouge , Sacrifice’s one hour run time is perfect for a film like this because I’m not sure your senses would be able to handle much more. Given the nature of this series, I knew I was in for a wild ride of gore and very realistic practical FX but this movie had my butt hole clenched for the entire last 50 minutes while I witnessed it’s sheer and unrelenting on screen self brutality that was inflicted by a wide variety of archaic tools by our troubled friend Daniel.

AGP: Sacrifice isn’t just a “Let’s see how far we can push the envelope” type gore flick, It’s smart, well shot and has well placed social and political undertones. We are essentially stuck in a bathroom for an hour with the main character Daniel (Robert Scorza) while he sacrifices himself to Ishtar (Flora Giannattasio) The Goddess of love, beauty, sex, desire, fertility, war, combat, and political power. As Daniel consults his “how to” book of sacrificial ritual, his acts become bloodier and more cringe inducing until we reach our insane bloody climax.

There are a few unanswered questions during and after viewing Sacrifice but I feel that adds to the mystique. It leaves much to your own interpretation and makes you think while you are watching which makes it even harder to take your eyes off of the carnage that unfolds. I was ultimately left with three words going through my head during and after Sacrifice……HOLY.FUCKING.SHIT.
