review 1: Thirteen-year-old Orestes (known as Oreo – like the cookie) lives on the Cerro de la Chingado – known as "the hill in the middle of (fucking) nowhere" – in the Mexican state of Jalisco. Orestes measures poverty in quesadillas. He and his six siblings have been named after figures from classical Greece by their high-school teacher father. Two of his siblings are abducted by alien beings. Oreo escapes his home and becomes a fake appliance repairman only to return home and be thrown in jail. His family’s home is bulldozed to make way for a new housing development. Nothing seems to go right. The aliens return in the last chapter. Weird book.
review 2: This is a really funny little satire of Mexican politics and family life. Orestes is fed up of livi
... moreng in a tiny, unfinished house and of having to compete for the family meals of Quesadillas; he doesn't believe it when his father tells him that every other place is the same. So, when his two youngest brothers disappear, he takes the chance to leave on an adventure to find them. Slightly crazy at times this is an enjoyable look at family life. less
