review 1: Enjoyed this story, about Clarissa who is the only daughter in her well to do family, she does have 3 brothers. They live in England, in a very large estate, with a lake, stables, maids, cooks etc. Her brothers go off to school but she is taught at home, what does she really need to know??? Her parents will marry her off to someone who is well to do and she will only need to know how to run another estate....at this time she is 16. Tom is a young man whose mother works for Clarissa's family in their kitchen, he is home from school, is allowed to use the library at the big house. Of course Clarissa and Tom fall in love, although it will never be allowed for them to be together...war comes along, the 3 brothers and Tom so to fight for England against Germany....years go... more by......cannot tell you anymore with out giving spoilers.
review 2: I just finished “The Last Summer” and it was outstanding! One of the most gripping, emotional stories I have read. For the past several days I read early in the morning, forced myself to put it down to go about my daily responsibilities; then stayed up late until my eyes couldn’t focus any more. That is a 5-star book for me! I loved this story!Author Judith Kinghorn captivated me from the vary beginning. Of course that’s not hard when it takes place in the beautiful English countryside – a favorite part of the world for me. The story begins just before WWI, continues through the heart of war, and extends well beyond the end of it. My grandfather fought in France during WWI so I love learning about it. Kinghorn's research was substantial and I was drawn in to feel the emotion of the characters and the challenges of the war.16-year-old Clarissa, daughter of the wealthy Granville family, meets the handsome son of the housekeeper, one Tom Cuthbert. That summer brings Clarissa, her three old brothers, and their wealthy friends together for all kinds of fun and parties befitting the English aristocracy at Deyning Park, the Granville’s grand country estate. Tom is welcomed and included even though he is not of the same class as all the others. Clarissa and Tom are drawn together in a friendship that continues to grow and secretly blossoms into a life-long bond of incredible love. However, class “restrictions” and WWI threaten and test Clarissa and Tom on their journey of love for years to come.“The Last Summer” is a compelling, dramatic, and heart-breaking historical saga that I didn’t want to put down. Clarissa and Tom entered my heart and soul. I just had to see how these two people that loved each other so tenderly and truly would evolve. I craved happiness for them. And I loved the final chapters!I do not give 5-stars often, but this one is incredible! Judith Kinghorn is now on my list of author to follow…to read…to collect…and to re-read some day. less

3.5 stars. It took a little while to really grab me even though I did like the characters.

Four stars because I cried at least twice and loved the ending.
