review 1: This book turns out to be a transcription of O’Reilly’s blog about a London wife removed to the north of England—hardly the Arctic adventure that I imagined from the title. O’Reilly, mother of three small children, and a former Sunday Times correspondent and TV producer, chronicles her daily life in what she sees as the remote sticks populated by farmwives. While she gradually grows to appreciate some of their qualities and the natural surroundings in which she has been immersed by her husband, subject of many wails about unhelpfulness (though it is apparent he must travel a lot for business, something that is supporting the cottage renovations that are being undertaken) O’Reilly is given to lamenting the lack of her interesting and convenient city life. The writ... moreing is part entertaining, part whine with an emphasis on the latter. Occasionally, O’Reilly gets off a truly amusing phrase or anecdote, but for the most part, this book like most blogs, is pretty self-indulgent.
review 2: I'm not normally much of a chick-lit fan, and this book did little to change my opinion. I found the main character's constant moaning irritating, the story-line dull, and found little to keep me interested enough to keep reading to the end. I did, however, finish the book, and the ending was typically predictable. If you want a good chick-lit read about a family living in the country, I would recommend Rafaella Barker's "Hens Dancing" and "Summertime" which are better written and far more entertaining. less

I didn't enjoy this as much as her other book and found the author irritating at times.
