1. What are you currently reading?
• The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien- LESS THAN A HUNDRED PAGES TO GO FOLKS!!
2. What did you recently finish reading?
• The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith (pseudonym for J.K. Rowling)- My thoughts on this one will be coming to you all very soon in a review, but I have to confess to some rather mixed feelings. On the one hand, I liked the characters, and thought the premise for the murder mystery was both unique and very clever. Yet, I’ve also come to the conclusion that I much prefer Rowling’s actual writing when she writes for a younger audience as, while her penchant for long passages of description helped enthral the audience and bring Hogwarts to life in Harry Potter, it seems excessive in a novel for adults. It was, of course, useful when she described key evidence in the murder mystery case, but even the most skilled of writers will struggle to make bleak London streets sound fascinating.
• Another Place by Matthew Crow- This was another book I read for The Book Bag , where my review will be appearing soon. Again, there are a few different issues I would raise about this one. To start on a more positive note, I was very pleased with the way the main character’s mental illness was dealt with, as Crow was able both to describe how her crippling depression coloured her view of the world, and how other characters were often insensitive when addressing her illness. The actual storyline- the main character setting out to find her missing friend- was something else I liked, especially the way Claudette soon began to associate getting closure for Sarah with overcoming her depression. So, really, I only have one main issue with this book…. Did Donna (Claudette’s best friend) really have to be so damn irritating?!! Other than that, this was an interesting read with a thrilling conclusion.
3. What do you think you will read next?
• The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling- Ha, review books and crammed schedule, take that! I may be struggling to fit in my annual Harry Potter reread this month, but now I have a cunning plan- I won’t specify which book in the series I’m reading next so no one will tell how embarrassingly behind I really am… I should probably have thought of this ingenious strategy about a month ago!
