review 1: I read an interview with Judy Nunn in Good Reading Magazine. She had interesting things to say, so I decided to read one of her books. "Territory" turned up on the book swap shelf at work, so I grabbed it.I really enjoyed the story. The synopsis above doesn't do it justice, but is adequate enough. I enjoyed how the story of the Batavia and of the Galloway family were told in parallel and came together in the end. I visited the maritime museum in Perth, WA two years ago and saw the re-created remains of the Batavia. It is an incredible story. Judy Nunn could have used another "vehicle" for the locket and its story, but I think the way she uses the Batavia and weaves it in to the tale of Darwin from the bombing in 1942 to Cyclone Tracy is brilliantly done. How timely t... moreo read this story in 2012. We have just observed the 60th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin. The Australian government covered up the bombing and destruction so comprehensively that many Australians are still astounded to learn of what happened on our own shores. If nothing else, Territory brings these events to life. It is true, however, that this is a work of fiction. It is a family saga that spans three generations. There's sex, violence and the account of events surrounding the Batavia is not for the faint hearted.I found some elements predictable, but there are also twists that I didn't foresee. Gasp out-loud twists! It was a good read.
review 2: A brief preface to my review. This book was 'required reading' through my blokes book club. I think what happened is that the guy who chose the book had it recommended by his wife and I'm sure she said something like "it's not a girl's book" as well as "they will really like it". Now I'm sure she is laughing herself silly telling her friends she's conned her husband and his mates into reading a very average woman's pulp novel.I was hoping that it was a historic summary of the Northern Territory and the fictional setting merely accentuated the colourful history of the top end. There was reference to the bombing of Darwin in WWII and Cyclone Tracy but really the 'story' was about an abusive husband and his primarily submissive English wife. The major events in the story are very unlikely and the 'twist' at the end was very unsatisfying to me. The ending was so predictable to be an extra disappointment. The book spent little time capturing the magnificent colour of the outback in the NT or of the characters in the area (and there are some rippers) compared to the opportunities that exist. I abhor domestic violence and poor parental behaviour towards children and I didn't feel this book portrayed an appropriate manner of dealing with either. less
