review 1: Summary - Skippyjon Jones takes off on an imaginary adventure with his friends los chimichangos to become an acrobat in Cirque de Ole.Curriculum connection - Using context clues to decode unfamiliar words. Personal Reaction - I loved this book. I liked the mix of Spanish and English words and the cure rhythm and song like nature of the text.Visual Appeal - I thought the bright images and the interesting proportions were great and the detail in the illustrations give children lots to take in.Intended Audience - Kindergarten to third grade, about five to nine years old.
review 2: An enjoyable story with some Spanish thrown in, which adds some learning value to the book, which any parent can appreciate. However, German being my second language, I tend to butcher... more Spanish repeatedly. It wasn't until I got to the end of this very adorable book that I realized it included a CD with the author reading the book. So I put it aside and brought it out again the next day, this time turning the pages for the wonderful storyteller herself, Judy Schachner. Feeling much better about the words I got right as we went through the book, my children and I laughed at the correct pronunciations and the antics of the cat. A cute story, but maybe more for grades K and up, not so much preschoolers. At least a level 2 reading level and it doesn't hurt to have your reader known a little about Spanish. In any case, the CD was a nice addition. less
